Acupunture

A key component of Traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.

acupuncture1In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation can boost activity of your body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow to treated areas.

One of the most notable benefits to acupuncture is that it is a drug-free way to minimize pain. With drugs, people often develop a tolerance, or the need for an increased dosage to continually achieve the same required effect. This, however, does not happen with acupuncture. Research also shows acupuncture therapy can be an effective alternative treatment for everything from headaches to obesity. In addition, acupuncture allows the physician to immediately examine a person’s response to the treatment and make adjustments if necessary.
